J/120 caper Wins 2012 Yachting Cup Overall

The 2012 Yachting Cup and Ton Cup regatta was held May 4, 5 & 6. New for this year was the reconfigured Ton Cup. The overall trophy would be awarded to the yacht with the best Friday thru Sunday daily ranking scores. For Friday, utilizing the clubs J/22s, a one day match race event was created for any Yachting Cup crew to enter. 16 teams jumped on the event and a seeded, double bracket, best of three series followed by a knockout series for the final eight teams was created. The final four boiled down to last minute entry Will Stout/Alchemy defeating Vince Brun/Stars & Stripes while Dan Ahling/Wings won over Kyle Clark/CC Rider. In the final match, Stars & Stripes won over CC Rider for 3rd place, and Will Stout/Alchemy won over Dan Aeling/Wings to win the match race portion of the Ton Cup on Friday.

So racing on Saturday and Sunday was back to ‘moderate San Diego’ – nothing like the storm-laden NOOD regatta in March. Skies were clear and the winds were a mild 6 – 8 kts from the south southwest. 87 boats assigned across three courses made their way to the start lines all located in the ocean. Venue A (West Ocean) included PH Div 1/ORR, PH Div 2 and Farr 40s. Venue B (Far Roads) hosted FT10, J/120, PH Div 3, and Beneteau 40.7. Venue C (Near Roads) hosted J/105s, J/80 and PH Div 4. Three races were run on Saturday. Back ashore the party venue was located this year in the main clubhouse. It was neat to see the band, merchandise, bars, crowds, etc. all embracing the main clubhouse and made a nice tight affair.

Sunday, weather-wise, was largely a repeat of Saturday. Winds were again 6 – 8 kts and two races were run on all courses. Back on the main clubhouse deck, the awards were wonderful gold/silver and bronze medals hung from a commemorative 40th anniversary ribbon.

The Overall Ton Cup scoring was close. Wings, who lost to Alchemy in the Match Race portion, had a daily score (their rank from race scores for that day only) of 1st on Saturday and 2nd on Sunday. Alchemy had a 3rd on Saturday and a 2nd on Sunday. Thus the team of Wings won by one point. Congratulations!

The Yachting Cup Overall Winner is a subjective determination that takes into account depth of competition, fleet size and observations by sailors, race committee and the organizing authority of the starts, mark rounding and finishes. The 2012 Yachting Cup Overall winner was the J/120 caper skippered by John Laun. John and his crew won custom gear from sponsor regattagear.com.

Many thanks to all the club members who helped out including, but not limited to, Chair Wayne Terry, Race Committee organization from RC Chair Jim Person and Yachting Cup Chair Susan Graff, Protest Committee support from Marilyn Foster and to Commodore Clark for his availability and encouragement throughout the event.

It is important also to thank all the competitors for their support via participation in our Yachting Cup event and taking the time to spend their valuable weekends enjoying the sport of sailing at our fine club.
